We’re thrilled to welcome Japanese label Prequel to Wardrobe 19.

We first discovered Prequel at a tradeshow in Berlin a few seasons back, where their shirts immediately stood out for their extraordinary fabrics—some of the finest we've ever come across. It was a clear decision: we had to bring them to Copenhagen.

Naturally, Prequel hails from Japan 🇯🇵
Their shirt-making craft is rooted in deep history, drawing inspiration from a rare 1907 fabric sample book by Claude Fréres (J. & Co., Paris). With microscopic attention to detail, Prequel revives these vintage textiles, reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens.

Classic three-piece workwear was widely popular among the working class in the 1920s to 1940s. It was not just work clothes, but also a way of expressing the wearer's pride.
Wearing a three-piece suit and presenting a neat appearance while working was a way of showing respect for one's profession. This attire, which was both functional and maintained a proper appearance, symbolized the very attitude toward work for the laborers of that era.

The original 1930s French trousers were more than a vintage reference — they became a study in how fabric itself was once made. By dismantling and analyzing the original garment thread by thread, Prequel uncovered the precise weaving techniques behind its deep color and striking striped contrast, achieved through careful control of yarn tension and density.

One unexpected discovery was the fabric’s duality: calm, classic stripes on the surface, and a bolder pattern on the reverse. This playful contrast revealed both the craftsmanship and sense of freedom found in textiles of the era — an approach rarely seen in modern fabric development.

To faithfully recreate this material, Prequel refined every step, from yarn selection to loom settings. Six different yarn types — including uneven, softly twisted, and high-twist yarns — are woven together to recreate the depth, texture, and three-dimensional stripes of the original. The result balances roughness and smoothness, vintage warmth and modern comfort.

Rich in character and responsive to light and wear, this fabric evolves over time. Meticulously crafted and deeply expressive, it is a rare textile designed to be appreciated for years to come.
