Belafonte is a Tokyo-based clothing brand led by designer Noboru Tanaka. With more than 25 years of experience, Tanaka’s deep appreciation for authentic vintage garments is evident throughout every Belafonte collection.

Inspired by his own extensive archive of vintage clothing, Tanaka and the Belafonte team reinterpret classic silhouettes through refined design and craftsmanship—creating garments that feel historically authentic while remaining entirely original.

All Belafonte pieces are made in Japan, using premium materials and produced in facilities renowned for exceptional quality. The brand stands proudly within the heritage and workwear scene.

Product Details:

High-waisted, vintage-inspired trousers featuring a buckle-back / cinch-back detail. Crafted from a newly developed Doromole mud-dyed slub yarn canvas in 100% cotton, these trousers offer a dry hand feel and a timeless workwear character.

The fit is roomy with a straight leg, staying true to classic silhouettes. Due to the traditional mud-dye process, each pair develops its own unique patina, making every garment slightly different.

Doromole Mud Dye Process:

Mud dyeing is a meticulous and time-intensive craft. The base fabric is first soaked in a natural mordant made from plant seeds, which helps the dye bind to the fibers and resist fading. Mud is then applied by hand to one side of the fabric before being laid out to dry in the sun.

Initially grey in tone, the fabric is stored indoors where the color gradually evolves into rich warm brown and rust hues. This process takes approximately six months to fully fix the dye. Once complete, the fabric is washed and sun-dried again.

Mud-dyed fabric can be gently hand-washed in cold water with mild detergent, with minimal color loss.
