We are proud to finally be able to carry the Belafonte Sumimole dye garments!
Each piece is slightly different because of the mud dye process of the fabric.
Very unique and beautiful patina.
The Sumimole fabric is similar to the popular doromole fabric.
The difference is that the doromole fabric is based in a brown color twill, and dyed in mud - yet the sumimole fabric is based on a neutral color twill (off-white) and the fabric is dyed in real Japanese ink.
It's a fascinating process. The base fabric is initially soaked in a natural mordant made from plant seeds which helps fix the dye to the fabric and prevent fading.
The ink is then applied by hand to one side of the fabric and the fabric is laid out to dry in the sun.
It takes 6 months in storage to fix the dye and to achieve this deep colour, after which the fabric is washed and sun dried once again.
(Sumimole cloth can be hand washed in cold water and mild detergent without much colour loss.)
Expect incredible patina from this fabric when the mud fades (similar to indigo & denim) and the base color of the canvas shine through.
Vintage inspired trousers with a high waist, suspender buttons, buckle back and split hem for a comfortable wear.
The pants are made in a roomy silhouette with a straight leg adding an authentic feel to the fit.
The trousers are made in a beautiful 13oz rigid non-selvedge denim from Japan.
Medium fits like 31"
