Belafonte is a Tokyo-based clothing brand founded by designer Noboru Tanaka. With more than 25 years of experience, Tanaka’s deep passion for authentic vintage garments is clearly reflected in every Belafonte collection.

Drawing inspiration from his own personal archive of vintage clothing, Tanaka and the Belafonte team apply their creative vision to reinterpret classic garments—creating pieces that feel historically authentic while remaining entirely original.

All Belafonte garments are made in Japan, using premium materials and produced in facilities renowned for exceptional craftsmanship. The brand stands proudly within the heritage and workwear scene.

Product Details:

A 1930s-inspired service vest crafted from Belafonte Ragtime’s newly developed slub yarn cotton canvas, finished using the traditional Doromole mud-dye process.

This piece reflects classic workwear aesthetics and pairs effortlessly with other Belafonte Doromole garments. Wear it together with the Hiback Buckle Back Trousers, Open Collar Shirt, and Peaked Lapel Jacket in matching fabric to complete the full look.

  • Made in Japan

Doromole Mud Dye Process:

Each garment is slightly different due to the traditional mud-dyeing process, resulting in a truly unique and beautiful patina.

Mud dyeing is a fascinating and time-intensive craft. The base fabric is first soaked in a natural mordant made from plant seeds, which helps fix the dye and prevent fading. Mud is then applied by hand to one side of the fabric, after which it is laid out to dry in the sun.

Initially grey in appearance, the fabric is stored indoors where the color slowly develops into warm brown and rust tones over a period of approximately six months. Once the dye has fully set, the fabric is washed and sun-dried again.

Mud-dyed fabric can be gently hand-washed in cold water using mild detergent, with minimal color loss.
