Belafonte is a Tokyo-based clothing brand led by designer Noboru Tanaka, whose more than 25 years of experience and deep appreciation for authentic vintage garments are evident throughout every collection.

Drawing from his own extensive archive of vintage clothing, Tanaka and the Belafonte team reinterpret classic designs through a refined creative lens—resulting in garments that feel historically grounded yet entirely original.

All Belafonte pieces are made in Japan, using exceptional materials and produced in facilities renowned for their craftsmanship. The brand stands as a strong and respected presence within the heritage and workwear scene.

Product Details:

Two of Belafonte’s most celebrated designs come together to form one of the most distinctive pairs of jeans on the market.

These jeans are crafted from Doromole cotton canvas, a unique mud-dyed fabric developed to age beautifully over time. The result is a rich, evolving patina that makes each pair truly one of a kind.

Inspired by early workwear, the fit is straight, wide, and high-waisted, staying true to classic vintage proportions. Functional details such as tool pockets, suspender buttons, and a buckle-back cinch reinforce the garment’s rugged workwear heritage.

Doromole Mud Dye Process:

Each pair is slightly different due to the traditional mud-dyeing process, resulting in a unique and beautifully nuanced finish.

Mud dyeing is a time-intensive and fascinating craft. The base fabric is first soaked in a natural mordant made from plant seeds, which helps fix the dye and prevent fading. Mud is then applied by hand to one side of the fabric, after which it is laid out to dry in the sun.

Initially grey in tone, the fabric is stored indoors where, over a period of approximately six months, the color gradually develops into deep warm brown and rust hues. Once the color has fully set, the fabric is washed and sun-dried again.

Despite its artisanal nature, Doromole mud cloth can be gently hand-washed in cold water with mild detergent, with minimal color loss.
